- There has been a history of debates regarding the exclusion that has been faced by people of varying identities in feminist movements. This research focuses on one dimension of this exclusion faced by people who are trans and gender diverse. This research explores the experiences of trans and gender diverse people who have engaged with various types of feminist spaces across NSW and the ACT. Participants in this research had a diverse range of genders with one trans man and trans woman and 4 participants with varying nonbinary genders. Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice is applied to explore and analyse the experiences of trans and gender diverse people in these spaces. It is also used to analyse the different ways that trans and gender diverse people navigate the process of engaging with these spaces. The experiences of trans and gender diverse people showcases the ways that mainstream feminist spaces continue to exclude and marginalise trans and gender diverse people. It also illustrates the ways that trans and gender diverse people seek out and engage a range of different feminist spaces that are open and safe. This research found that trans and gender diverse people had a rage of experiences and utilised varied strategies to engage with feminist spaces that would be safe. This research also highlights the contestation over what is a feminist space. Feminist principles are an important characteristic of these spaces and those which do not apply these principles are not viewed as being ‘feminist spaces’ by trans and gender diverse people. Finally, this research found that trans and gender diverse people want to see feminist spaces in the future become more diverse and intersectional for people of a range of different identities.
